Screaming Gander is a private gallery in Manchester, established by artist Ian Rayer-Smith with a single clear intention: to put serious work in front of serious collectors.
Rayer-Smith trained in fine art at Salford University before committing fully to painting with a practice built on instinct and directness rather than art-world convention. When the time came to bring his work to the world, he chose to do it on his own terms. Screaming Gander was the result.

The gallery takes its name from an encounter on a local canal when a moment of unexpected noise from the water’s feather residents gave rise to a character that felt like an honest metaphor for Rayer-Smith’s art that refuses to be quiet about what it is. That same quality runs through the space itself, originally intended to be Ian’s working studio.
As Ian grew as an artist and moved to a larger studio space, Screaming Gander’s considered series of rooms evolved into an art haven designed for unhurried, uninterrupted engagement with the work.
Manchester is a natural home for Screaming Gander. The city has long understood the value of making things that matter, and it has a collector base that responds to quality without needing the validation of a London postcode. Screaming Gander operates by appointment, the address shared on request, and for those travelling from further afield, the city is well connected and well worth the journey.
