Biography
Ian Rayer-Smith is a British contemporary abstract painter whose work explores emotional presence, psychological space, and the tension between instinct and intention. Based in Manchester, he has built a reputation among collectors internationally through work that carries a classical sensibility while forging an entirely distinctive visual language.
Rayer-Smith trained in fine art at the University of Salford before developing a practice rooted in instinct and process rather than fixed technique. His paintings are built through accumulation and chance; a method that keeps the work unpredictable and alive, and that draws as much from previous canvases as from external influence. The Abstract Expressionist tradition is a clear touchstone, but the work is firmly of its own moment.
In 2025, Rayer-Smith held solo exhibitions at the Gefen Gallery in San Francisco and the Loisir Art Gallery in West Hollywood. In 2026, he will make his solo debut in Australia with an exhibition at the Bonham Gallery in Sydney. This is a significant moment as Australia is a market in which his work has already found a significant collector base.
Screaming Gander, his private gallery in Manchester, was established to bring the work directly to serious collectors on his own terms. For collectors, the work speaks for itself. The paintings are there to be experienced.
